On the first night of the 2022–23 Premier League season, a header by Gabriel Martinelli in the first half and an own goal by Marc Guehi gave Arsenal a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

Although Mikel Arteta’s club fell to Palace 3-0 in the comparable game last season, this was a great start for an Arsenal team that has improved during the summer.

Gabriel Jesus made his official debut for his new squad and was impressive right away, but fellow Brazilian Martinelli scored the game’s first goal after 19 minutes by heading in an intricate corner that involved Oleksandr Zinchenko.

When Bukayo Saka’s cross was deflected into the goal by Guehi’s head five minutes from time, Arsenal ended the game. Palace had made a valiant effort to tie the score and forced Aaron Ramsdale into many saves.

Live score updates and commentary were provided by The Sporting News as they covered the game.

SALIBA, AT LEAST, LEAVES A GOOD FIRST IMAGE Prior to kickoff, there was much discussion about the two new Arsenal players, but it was another player making his Premier League debut that stood out the most. William Saliba, a French defender, had to wait three years for this occasion, but he didn’t let it pass him by, turning in a man-of-the-match performance.

Saliba felt secure facing a physical Crystal Palace assault. The 21-year-old not only handled everything that was thrown at him, but he also contributed significantly to Arsenal’s ability to advance the ball out of the back. Gunners supporters have long pondered Saliba’s performance with the parent club’s first team. There is now some evidence that he will play a significant role on Arteta’s team.

PERFECT JESUS FOR ARTETA’S ARSENAL Jesus is a Premier League champion, but his summer move from Manchester City to Arsenal gave fans the impression that he may be given new life. His first-half display against Palace only served to confirm this notion. The Brazilian was incredibly quick and repeatedly looked like he may get through the defense of the opposition. He had a chance to get one or two.

Jesus is obviously intended to be used as a No. 9, but Arteta allows the 25-year-old to stray into open spaces to create opportunities for space exploits. Jesus is adept at leading a high press and continuously gave the Palace defense something to consider. He is ideal for the group of players Arteta has put together based on this performance.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE PALACE Even though Palace lost on the first night of the season, Patrick Vieira could still draw some positives from the way his team played. The hosts made good use of their chances and had Odsonne Edouard and Eberechi Eze on the scoresheet. Throughout the game, especially in the second half, they forced the Gunners to play by their rules.

The 12 long passes Joachim Andersen attempted from the center of defense were all successful because Palace did a superb job of focusing on the Arsenal full-backs. The home team probably would have won this game if they had more finesse in front of goal. The Eagles can build on certain aspects.

SOUTHGATE GETS A LOT FROM RAMSDALE TO PONDER At Selhurst Park for the opening match of the 2022–23 Premier League season, Gareth Southgate was a keen watcher and undoubtedly had some opinions on Aaron Ramsdale’s performance, who was pressed into a number of stops. Particularly impressive were two saves made by Edouard and Eze.

Ramsdale, though, occasionally lacked accuracy with the ball. Arteta requests that his number one play out from the back, but Southgate needs to think about what the 2022 World Cup will require of his goalkeeper. Ramsdale may be the finest shot-stopper England has at the moment, but he frequently makes mistakes when in control of the ball. Is Southgate ready to overlook those errors?
