Using their computer, lottery officials tracked the $50.1 million winning ticket to Kwik Stop No. 3 in North Platte, Nebraska, in the hours following the Powerball drawing, which took place on this day in 1988.

Dianne and Lyle Fleharty purchased the winning ticket while in North Platte to see their son compete in a baseball tournament, according to Stan Tegler of Hastings, who claimed to be married to the probable winner’s sister.

Four days later, at the offices of the Nebraska Lottery, the Hastings couple, both natives of Nebraska, began a news conference by describing how they watched on television as the numbers 1, 2, 8, 21, 31, and the Powerball number of 18 were drawn on the evening of July 30. Fleharty had already reprimanded his wife for choosing the numbers 1 and 2 on each of the five $1 tickets they had purchased. They claimed it was their first time playing the Powerball lottery, which had just started in Nebraska on July 21.

The Flehartys’ phone number was changed in the days before the press conference, so they could not be reached for comment.
I needed to organize my thoughts, Lyle remarked. He described the event as “nearly unfathomable.”

Dianne Fleharty recommended they purchase siding for the house after they won, and the family made jokes about additional necessities like a garage, a new driveway, and a sprinkler system.

The Flehartys approached him at the Kutak Rock law firm’s Omaha headquarters, according to Steven Seline, the Flehartys’ recently hired tax and estate attorney.
“The Flehartys are fortunate, but Seline added, “the lottery is fortunate to have them win it. They are genuinely kind and joyful folks.”

Acting Lottery Director Jim Quinn announced that the Flehartys will receive the first of 20 annual payments, which would total $1,680,261.85 after taxes, two weeks after winning the prize.
