Wijnaldum only recently joined Roma, moving there on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in pursuit of consistent first-team play. The 31-year-old made his professional debut for Roma in their 1-0 victory against Salernitana in their Serie A debut last weekend, but he now anticipates a protracted absence from the field.

The former Liverpool favorite fractured his tibia after colliding with Afena-Gyan in training on Sunday, putting him on the verge of missing the World Cup in Qatar and needing at least three months off. The accident is alleged to have devastated the 19-year-old Ghanaian forward.

Giallorossi manager Mourinho has now commented after Roma released a statement announcing the injury and expressing their support for Wijnaldum. The former coach of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham complimented Wijnaldum for his effect on the team since joining and blasted those who criticized Afena-Gyan for his part in the incident.

Following an injury received during practice on Sunday afternoon, Georginio Wijnaldum underwent medical testing, which revealed the presence of a tibia fracture in his right leg. Roma later released a statement confirming Wijnaldum’s condition. Additional evaluations of the player will take place in the upcoming days. GINI FORZA!

According to rumors, Roma may decide to have Wijnaldum have surgery right away in order to speed up his recuperation and increase the likelihood that he will play again for the Italian team in the coming months.

The news comes as an untimely blow to the Netherlands international, who was desperate to restart his career in Serie A after it had stalled with PSG after joining the Ligue 1 giants on a free transfer from Liverpool last summer after five seasons filled with trophies.
