Actor Matt Smith is starring in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, but this isn’t how he had imagined his life would pan out.

The 39-year-old former Dr. Who star was a talented young football player for Leicester City and only started thinking about acting after his sports career was cut short.

Though he also played for the Nottingham Forest young team, he was expected to play professionally. However, an injury caused him to leave up football at the age of 16 and pursue a career in acting.

However, he admitted in a recently discovered interview with Esquire magazine from 2010 that “it was quite tough.” Because that was all I had ever invested in, I recall crying. I hadn’t really thought about acting.

I felt like I was so sure that’s what I was going to do, he added. My insecure side was like, “I am that and I am the footballer, you know, and at school I was the footballer and suddenly I wasn’t that,” so it was difficult for me to tell people I had been released.

The figure, who used the Valyrian steel blade Dark Sister, was the most skilled warrior of his era 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Recently, it was made public that Smith changed altered his roles in movies and television shows in order to feature in Noel Gallagher’s music video for the song We’re On Our Way Now.

Despite his long career in music, Noel said he still doesn’t like the notion of making music videos for his songs, adding he “f*****g hates” them “with a passion.”

But with regards to his friend Matt, he added: “One night he was over at our house, and as he was leaving at four in the morning, I remarked, “Hey mate, you don’t fancy being in a video do you?” “Ey pal you dont fancy being in a movie do you?” “Yes, no problem,” he replied. And I kind of held him accountable.

Noel admitted he had no idea what was going on in the video and continued, “The second video follows on from this one, so he’s “Matt” in the next one too.”
