Family fun at Festival

This August, the cultural heart of the Jurassic Coast bursts into life with a dazzling programme of events, sights and sounds between the 11th and 27th.

There's excitement for all the family with children's art workshops, puppet creation master-classes, child-friendly 'scary' theatre, Olympic trampoline taster sessions, Jurassic Coast discovery tours, a real-life marauder as a Pirate Day, electric bike-ride trails, 'forage-learning' guides for Dorset's wild array of edible delicacies, a Dr Who extravaganza ('great seats for best dressed'), arts and sports events for those with special needs, as well as the crowd-wowing, ever-loved Bridport Carnival, complete with torch-lit spectacular. There's also a nocturnal pyrotechnical and cinematic dream of a Beach Party lighting-up the West Bay skyline and much, much more.

Festival goers flocking to Bridport will be greeted by a town buzzing with cultural activities and events. Running throughout the 17 days is a huge range of creative, dynamic fun to take part in. Alongside workshops, talks and events are open-air performances from musicians, bands, dancers, jugglers, mime-artists, street opera stars and poets, blended together to bring Bridport's streets and venues to sparkling life.

Festival Director Tamsin Chandler, working alongside Festival founder Ros Kayes, has planned the activity programme to appeal to all ages, especially younger minds. Tamsin said, 'We've put community and family at the heart of the Festival of Culture. The action packed-programme offers magical experiences for children and adults to enjoy, learn and ultimately be inspired by ground-breaking musical, theatrical and visual performances, workshops and installations. The Bridport Festival of Culture experience is going to be sensational'.

Highlights for families & young minds include:

Dragon's Teeth at the Lyric Theatre

A puppetry performance escapade & puppet workshop master-class for 5-16 year olds. Produced by the Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company at The Lyric Theatre.

Something is grumbling under that pile of scrunched up newspapers and cardboard! Is it a tiny Wizard practicing his spells? Is it a sleepy ogre grabbing forty winks? Actually, it does sound quite a lot like a Dragon with tooth-ache, and if it is, can a dentist who isn't scared of Dragons be found? Come along and enjoy the show and afterwards make your own puppet from found materials with Puppet Maestro Marc Parrett.
