Divorces down..we can't afford it!

According to new figures released by find-a-solicitor service, Contact Law the number of enquiries from people wanting to file for divorce, dropped by more than a third in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011.

Contact Law, which refers legal enquiries to more than 5,000 solicitors throughout the UK, saw a 38% drop in divorce-related enquiries in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, as economic pressures have forced couples to stay in unhappy marriages because they cannot afford to divorce.

Historically, more people file for divorce in the first quarter of the year than any other time of the year.

January and February are well known as the ‘divorce months’, as stress levels that have built up before and over the festive period come to a head.

However, unlike pervious years, the beginning of 2012 did not see the normal spike in divorce enquiries.

Couples feeling the financial pinch couldn’t face the high cost of splitting up – covering the cost of legal fees, coupled with the stress of trying to sell a property and splitting joint assets.

These figures suggest that many couples are choosing to postpone getting divorced until the economy recovers, rather than add to their financial stresses.

Dan Cole, Director, Contact Law, said: “The ongoing problems affecting the UK economy, and the everyday financial pressures on married couples, have left many forced to stay in marriages they would rather not be in.

“The financial reality is that many couples simply can’t afford to get divorced at the moment, with legal fees to pay and the financial implication of splitting assets. On top of that, trying to sell the marital home in a flat property market is only likely to add to the stress levels, particularly if the parties are relying on the sales proceeds to buy separate properties.
